Fourth grader Sherron Parker from Mae Elementary won the spelling bee
April 10, 2009 (CHICAGO) (WLS) -- Some Chicago elementary students showed their spelling ability goes beyond simple letters for text messaging.
It was the first 'West Side Beat the Spelling' Spelling bee!
Students from 23 schools competed for the title of best speller. The students from the 3rd and 4th grade division.
The winner here was 4th grader Sherron Parker from Mae Elementary. She won a new computer.
Organizers came up with the spelling bee after someone remarked that kids have a difficult time spelling because they use so many short cuts when text messaging. They hope to make it an annual event.
